The Laestrygonians Attack

My final Senior Year project was to illustrate scenes from a fictional game I thought up based off of the Odyssey. The Game was a retelling of the Odyssey, only in Space. Instead of Triremes, the Greeks travelled across space in similarly shaped spaceships. The game would start as a RTS, move to a RPG, and end up finally as a Shooter, as the greek fleet shrunk from a bunch of ships, to Odysseus's ship, to Odysseus alone.

Surrounding a young star, an accretion disc of raw material, asteroids and ice chunks float silently in the vacuum of space. Amongst those chunks of rock, the Laestrygonians dwell, a violent, warlike faction of pirates. Most people think they're savages, and most people would be right. They take no prisoners, and recycle everything they get their hands on, scrapping any ship outside of their faction, regardless of the crew on-board. They use Metal Asteroids as basis for their ships - boring out large holes for living sections and engines. The resulting ships are incredibly durable, but lack weaponry. So instead of shooting their prey they simply accelerate into and collide with their enemies. Such a collision is usually devastating to the ship, a crippling blow which allows for boarding and close, hand to hand combat. By the time Odysseus and his fleet noticed the plume of thrust shooting out of the end of an asteroid, it was too late. Before most of the fleet had time to react, power up shields or make another blind jump the asteroids were upon the fleet, and in seconds it was over. All but one ship had been destroyed, and Odysseus knew it was too late to save the rest of his fleet. The Laestrygonians we're too strong in number, too hard to discern from the asteroids. Beaten, he fled, once again into the depths of space.

Laestrygonians - A violent, warlike faction of pirates, known for guerilla, and kamikaze tactics. They use Metal Asteroids as basis for their ships - boring out large holes for living sections and engines. The resulting ships are incredibly durable, but lack weaponry. So instead of shooting their prey they simply run into it, usually disabling the ship and allowing for boarding and capture. They live among asteroid belts and rings around gas giants - their asteroid ships blending in nearly perfectly to the surrounding environment. Most ships don't realize they are under attack until they see an asteroid speeding towards them, a plume of thrust blasting out one end. By then its usually too late. After being 'blown' off course by the malfunctioning Aeolian device, Odysseus's battle group jumps into an asteroid belt rife with Laestrygonians, who promptly destroy and cannibalize all but Odysseus's ship.
